Shingletown Totem Pole

Description : Shingletown Crafted from a 340-year old sugar pine, this 60-foot tall sculpture keeps watch over the town. The topmost figure-the watchman-is a stellar jay looking out for trouble. The next figure is a powerful thunder bird with ram's horns. The main figure on the pole-the trickster-is a raven and is said to possess magical powers. A beaver and grizzly bear complete the group. In the beginning the animals and the birds gathered each year in Northern California to have their Annual Council Meeting to talk about what they could do to make their mountains a better place to live.
