About Janesville
The town of Janesville California used to be referred to as Gas Light and Lassen yet the latest name has now been used exclusively for decades. Janesville is situated on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and is the closest thing to a real mountain-train town in the entire region. The town is the site of a certified California Historic Landmark with Fort Janesville. The history of the fort is that in 1860, after the battle of Pyramid Lake, the settlers built a stockade for protection against the Indian attacks that were frequent then. The next attack never materialized and the stockade closed up for good a few years later. The fort is a great place to take the family and educate them on a piece of Northern California history that is a wonderful lesson on exactly what it took to settle the area.
