About Burney

The town of Burney California has a population of 3,200 and most of them seemingly are outside when you come into town for your fine vacation. Make sure you schedule any vacation to this Northern California town in the summer months especially around July the 4th for the annual celebration that has been a family event there since 1954. Do you feel like running for a sweet and deliciously prepared ham? If the 4th of July festivities wasn’t enough for you there is also the Ham Run, which is a two mile walk/run. If you race and finish with the top ten finishers you will find yourself wining a 5 lb ham! After you have consumed that delicious ham its time to lay down for a bit and Burney has a great amount of cottages and cabins in which you can bed down for the night.

The environmental character of Burney California is one that will have to be seen to be appreciated. From the majestic snow-covered peaks of Mount Shasta to the bubbling and soothing sounds of the mighty Sacramento River the area is one of extremes. There are so many great places to camp out and just really experience what Northern California is all about its natural greatness. There are many towns and little tucked away hamlets in Shasta County that it is hard to decide on which ones to visit and experience. One that should be tops on the list for any family vacation is Burney. This town has a real traditional old world feel to it and will definitely leave you with a new found appreciation of the grit and determination it must have took to live back in the California Gold Rush days. The area is well-known as a ghost town lover’s paradise with the old styled metal shutters and bar swinging doors still in place in some areas of town. The town of Burney California may not have any spirits of the eternal kind roaming the dusty roads and thoroughfares yet there could be a surprise or two lurking in the shadows?
