Siskiyou County Information


The largest county in the entire Shasta region is Siskiyou County. The beauty of the county can only be attempted to be described as it takes a real physical sighting to fully understand its awesomeness. The outdoors loving member of the family will be in pure heaven after setting eyes on the majestic plateau of Mount Shasta or the eternal beauty of the Klamath River. Either one of those is enough to send an army of tourists to the Shasta area. This region has so many amenities to enjoy the only issue is how to schedule all of them into just a one week trip?

The answer to the afore mentioned question would be to schedule two weeks in Siskiyou County as to make certain that you will see enough if not all of the areas magnificence. Mount Shasta is the anchor resource of the county and deserves that title as no other natural erection has so much unique and eternal fascination. The volcano reaches 14,000 feet into the heavens and remains the reigning champion for the legends of fans that come from all over the globe just to get a glimpse of the wonder of Northern California. The climbers that come here to attempt to scale the massive structure are in for quite a challenge to their physical and mental stamina. This is not an easy climb but one that any determined climber will be proud to retell in the numerous fireside story episodes of bragging. The summer is the best time to climb this beautiful creation adorned with flowers that only grow in the volcanic fields of Northern California. There are six independent and free-flowing rivers in the Siskiyou County region and they all have certain unique qualities that can be explored and enjoyed regardless of what the requirements are. The fisherman can enjoy the clam waters of the McCloud River and hopefully tussle with a trophy sized Steelhead or maybe even a beautiful Rainbow Trout! All of the six rivers in the Siskiyou County area contain dynamic fishing opportunities yet there are better locations within the rivers and an experienced guide would be wise to enlist to give you the best chance at landing the one that did not get away! The other notable rivers are the Klamath, Salmon, Scott, and the Shasta, all are perfect for swimming or just splashing about in a pleasure pool of excitement. The water-ways offer the best in skiing and rafting with the most favorable time of year being well, any really! There is no off-time to come to Siskiyou County as the both the people and the environment are always there willing and ready to offer you a gigantic welcome.

The largest city in the Siskiyou County region is Yreka. Now this ‘Wonder of the West’ need not be confused with its nearby neighbor Eureka yet they do share a commonality and that is the shout when the old-miners discovered the object of their desires, gold! The ‘Golden City’ is the lone full-service community within 100 miles of the Oregon border so it is wise to stock up on the essentials before you depart from the town. There are many other towns and villages that will have the overall essentials for a great family vacation yet the little things that always seem to either be left at the cottage or just plain forgotten are the ones to be concerned with before saying goodbye to Yreka. The campers need not to worry about locating a decent spot to pitch camp as the entire county is one big camping opportunity. One of the jewels of the entire area is the hike to Whiskeytown experience. Here you can hike the 1.7 miles to the town of Whiskeytown and get a stiff drink for your monumental effort! Maybe a Diet Coke or a bottle of water will be sufficient yet this is Northern California and you are on holiday? During the hike there is a huge surprise and a refreshingly wonderful one as well! There is a 220 foot waterfall that you can climb under and be instantly refreshed and feel the invigorating cooling waters of the fall encompass you’re entire body and mind! What a way to break the monotony of a long and strenuous hiking adventure with a shower of goodness! The Siskiyou County region offers so many other hiking opportunities just waiting for you to explore.

The Siskiyou County area has so many accommodations and camping sites that the issue will be where to select out of some of the worlds best choices? From a quaint and comfortable cottage on a crystal clear lake to the rugged outdoorsmen’s adventure of a lifetime and a sleep under the stars experience on the base of Mount Shasta, the choices are endless. The best-bet is to just pick one and be satisfied that the choice will be a magnificent one regardless of where it is as along as it is in the Siskiyou County area.
